NEW DELHI: The office of the Block Development Officer (BDO) of West Bengal’s Chandrakona-II Development Block recently witnessed a walk down memory lane.
30 elderly couples, many of whom work at the office, decided to take register their marriages with their partners, at the behest of BDO Sashwata Prakash Lahiri.
Explaining his strange request, Lahiri said: A few days ago, a lady, who had been recently widowed, came to my office to claim her husband’s dues. Problems cropped up when another woman turned up and claimed that she was, in fact, the real wife. But neither woman could show any proof of their marriage. It took us a long time to decide who the real wife was. Upon inquiry, I realised that many of my colleagues had not register their marriages.
“I took the decision that all of them should register their marriage and arranged for the same,” Lahiri added.
And that was that.
While many of those involved were intially hesitant, they still came decked up and enthusiastically agreed to utter their vows.
